Ivan Wong and Ma Kee resign as district councilors

Wong, a Kwai Tsing district councilor announced his resignation on social media today as he will refuse to pledge allegiance to the SAR government. His resignation will take effect on May 31.
Wong also apologized for not being able keep the promises he made during his run in the election.
Ma announced his resignation on social media earlier as well, and thanked residents in the So Kwun Wat district for voting for him.
He explained that there have been many political changes and restrictions recently, making district work more difficult. Therefore after consideration he decided to resign from his post of Tuen Mun district councilor.
Ma also promised to keep fighting for democracy and freedom for Hong Kong.
The Public Offices (Candidacy and Taking Up Offices) (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill 2021 is passed today.
It requires district councilors to take an oath or sign a declaration to pledge allegiance to the SAR government and uphold the Basic Law, the same requirement imposed for civil servants earlier.
